The secret to being a CAPTIVATING presenter on Instagram

I see so many people make this mistake on social media. We draw the wrong conclusion as to why we are not more successful in maximizing our social media presence, more specifically Instagram.

We think it's because we do not have the right strategies.

We don't know the "SECRET".

And that might be partly true. The strategies part, not the secret part.

There is no secret, really!

But more often than not, what really holds us back from being successful at leveraging Instagram is CONFIDENCE.

Yes. It has to do a lot with confidence.

Today I’m sharing with you 3 simple steps on how to bring more energy and confidence to when you show up on Instagram. Whether that's a live video, IG stories, or IG TV.

First, why confidence? Why is it important especially for someone who has a message to share and wants to boldly talk about their products and services?

Well, let me ask you a question. Have you ever sat through a presentation or watched a video where it was obvious that the speaker or presenter was super nervous? Their hands and voice were shaking, maybe they were sweating profusely, and you could tell they were very uncomfortable and insecure?

How did you feel watching them? Did you feel bad for them? Did you feel like you were a bit sitting on pins and needles the whole time because you were nervous for them? Were you able to fully enjoy the presentation and be engaged? I know I’ve sat through a few of these presentations myself. At one of them, I was seriously worried about the person passing out.

While I was very concerned for them you know what I didn’t feel at the end?

An assurance that this person really knows what they are talking about. Full trust that this person can really do what they just said they could do. I had serious questions and doubts about really fully believing and trusting the words they just shared. Why?

Because when we see a confident person, we suddenly feel at ease.

I want to pause here for a second and address a misconception about confidence. Confidence is not arrogance. There’s a huge difference. A confident person is fully aware of their strengths and weaknesses. And chooses to lean into using their strengths to better the lives of others. A fully confident person is highly aware of what they are capable of doing, yet they are not braggy about it. At the same time, they also don't apologize for their strengths but instead fully embrace them. And because of this, when we see a confident person, we relax.

We feel, ok this person obviously knows what they are talking about so we can rest assured and trust in their abilities.

If you are serious about having your message heard by more people than you have to have a certain amount of confidence in order to effectively share your message.

If you are reading think and think, OMG, I’m not confident, I don’t think I can do this. How can I be more confident?

I have REALLY good news for you.

Confidence is a learnable skill! No one is born with it. It’s something we all can and need to work on daily. It’s an ongoing process.

So, in the last part of this post, I’m going to share with you 3 strategies that I personally use to raise my confidence level before any online presentation, whether that's an Instagram live, IG stories, or IG Tv. 

#1 Start asking high-value questions

Many of us ask low-quality questions of ourselves right before we hit the going live or record button. Either consciously or subconsciously. Questions like: “What will they think of me? Will they judge me? Will they think I’m good enough? Will I forget the words?" When you ask questions like that, how does that make you feel? Do you feel empowered to step up? These questions are also self-focused which puts even more pressure on us to perform really well. 

So, instead of asking these negative questions, I like to flip the script and start asking better questions by putting the focus on my audience. So instead ask quality questions like: “What is great about this opportunity? How can I serve my audience at the highest level? What am I grateful for in this? What is the positive impact of applying what I’m sharing? What would be a great outcome for my audience from my presentation?”

Asking better questions helps us come up with better answers and elevated confidence.

#2 Breath

During anxious or stressful times we forget to breathe. Focusing on your breathing can make a huge difference. 

In fact, let's try this right now.

I want you do relax your body and take a deep breath in right now. 

Now do it again!

And again.

How do you feel? Probably more relaxed. Now let’s take it a step further. I’ve learned this advanced exercise from a good friend of mine who’s a psychologist. It’s called the grounding technique. 

I want you to take a deep breath then look around and find 5 colors that you can either call out loud or say in your head.  Then wiggle your toes. Take another deep breath and feel the air filling your lungs. 

What’s going on in your head now?

Nothing! Welcome to being PRESENT!

That exercise helps you feel grounded and come back to being present. One of the best emotional states that you can find yourself in before a presentation is to be present.

Not thinking about the next 5 steps you have to teach on but just being fully present. The reason why you struggle to have people feel connected to you or feel your presence is because you are not present. Try this exercise any time you are about to hit the record or go live button on your phone or computer. It works like a charm.

#3 Body stance and posture

We not only communicate with our words but our bodies as well. In fact, according to research body language is many times louder than our words. When it comes to elevating your confidence level there is one exercise that you can do and literally, in 2 minutes it can help you feel more confident.

I practice this before I step in front of the camera and it really helps.

It’s called the POWER Position.

I personally stand like this for about 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

And it works. 

This posture alone helps me get into a different mindset. I feel more empowered and energized.

I immediately feel more energy coming through my voice and expressions.

Try it out! It really works.

The next time you plan to speak anywhere. On Instagram stories, on an FB live, on a pre-recorded video or even on a physical stage,(remember those ;) ) implement the 3 strategies I just shared with you and see what kind of response you get from your listeners and viewers.
